Of Mice and Men | Plot Overview

Hey guys
I have recently read the book Of Mice and Men and decided that it may be useful to some of you to have the plot overview...

Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck in 1937 and is considered one of his finest works.

The story follows two American men named George and Lennie.George is small with dark, sharp fetures and Lennie is very tall with a shapeless face. Lennie has a mild mental disorder which means that he has to rely on George for security and guidance.

At the beginning of the story, they have been let off a bus miles away from the farm in California where they are due to work. They set up camp so they can sleep and George finds that Lennie, who likes stroking soft things but often kills them, is carrying a dead mouse in his pocket. George throws it away and tells Lennie that he could catch a disease. George and Lennie share a dream of owning their own land to farm and keeping rabbits (Lennie loves rabbits). George tells Lennie the story of the life that they hope to lead.

When George and Lennie get to the ranch where they have to work, they meet an old man called Candy and his ancient dog. They also meet Curley who is their bosses son. When Curley leaves, his wife comes in and tries to flirt with the boys. George warns Lennie that he shouldn’t talk to her. They meet another man named Slim who also works at the ranch. He says that his dog has just had puppies and offers one to Lennie, who is very excited. The other workers decide to shoot Candy’s ancient dog and offer him a puppy as well.

Candy overhears George and Lennie talking about their plans to buy land. They make a pact to include Candy in this plan but to tell no one else. Curley comes into the room, looking for his wife. He wants to take his anger out on someone and chooses Lennie who, in panic, crushes Curley’s hand.

The next day, all of the men are playing a game outside and Lennie is in a barn petting his dog. Lennie accidently kills the puppy after being too rough with it. Curley’s wife comes in and they have a short conversation. Curley’s wife asks Lennie if he would like to feel her soft hair but when she has had enough and tells Lennie to get off, he panics and tightens his grip on her head, shaking it until he breaks her neck and kills her.

Lennie feels guilty and runs away, scared that George will find out and call off their pact. George and the other men do find out and leave, with guns, to find Lennie. At the end of the book, George shoots Lennie in the back of the head whilst telling him the story of their plan for the future.

The book, in my opinion, is very good. It contains complicated issues such as sexism ,racism and mental disabilities. Steinbeck managed you write an interesting and descriptive story in less than 110 pages. Once I started reading it, I could not put the book down so would definitely recommend that you read Of Mice and Men.

Until next week
